Unistrut seismic bracing systems are designed and constructed to resist the code-specified seismic forces acting on a building. Their job is simple but critical: keep pipes, ductwork and other hanging installations from moving laterally during an earthquake, so that people and equipment stay safe.
How to install Unistrut seismic bracing systems
The installation follows eight steps. Each one depends on the previous one, so skipping or rushing them puts the whole system at risk.
- Determine the installation location. The position and spacing of the seismic brackets are set by the building’s design and structural characteristics — this is normally assessed and planned by a professional engineer.
- Prepare the support materials. Choose the steel or concrete supports required by the design, and make sure they comply with the relevant construction and seismic standards.
- Prepare the foundation or mounting surface. The surface must be flat, dry and clean so the brackets can be fastened and bonded effectively.
- Install the brackets. Position each seismic bracket exactly where the design calls for. Cutting, positioning and welding may all be involved.
- Fasten and connect. Connect the brackets to the structural members with bolts, nuts or welding, and verify that every connection meets the design requirements.
- Test the performance. After installation, verify the brackets with vibration and load testing under simulated seismic conditions.
- Document the installation. Record the location, materials, installation date and test results for every bracket — these records are used for future inspection and maintenance.
- Maintain and monitor. Inspect the brackets regularly, and repair or replace them whenever their condition no longer meets the design requirements.
The key to a safe installation
Correct installation is what makes seismic bracing work. It takes precise planning, competent engineers and the right materials — do all three and the brackets will do their job when it matters, reducing the losses and risks an earthquake would otherwise bring.
